1. Evaluation of Shine Coaching – in collaboration with Lancaster University’s Health Evaluation Facility

Shine Coaching provide a free telephone-based coaching for men living in Lancashire, who are struggling to deal with stress, anger and conflict in their daily lives (https://shine-coaching.com/).

Lancaster University’s Health Evaluation Facility, along with consultants Professor Kaz Stuart and myself, began working with Shine Coaching at the end of 2025 to evaluate this service. Kaz will be developing a Theory of Change with Shine Coaching staff and we will then explore, using surveys and qualitative interviews, experiences of delivering/receiving coaching and the shorter and longer term impacts.

My contribution to the collaboration: Lead for the qualitative evaluation

IMPROVING INCLUSION IN EUROPEAN MYELOMA CLINICAL TRIALS

Better inclusion of real-world populations fosters more equitable,
effective, and trusted advances in treatment for myeloma and other cancer patients. There is no consensus on how
to improve the inclusion of under-served populations in European myeloma clinical trials.

The initial scoping review was designed to map out the breadth of evidence on existing frameworks, toolkits, initiatives and best practice guides intended to support the recruitment of under-served populations into clinical trials and identify knowledge and practice gaps.

A search for relevant literature was conducted in 4 databases: Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), PsycINFO, and ERIC. Grey literature was also searched using Google search engine. We also searched the websites of ‘key partners’ (e.g., EU ethics bodies, sponsors) and use reference chaining to identify other sources. Screening, selection, and data extraction was performed by 2 independent reviewers until acceptable IRR score is achieved for each screening stage.

The scoping review was the first phase of a multi-stage research project to identify barriers, build consensus, and create solutions and recommendations for the inclusion of underserved populations
in European myeloma clinical trials. Workshops with key stakeholders (i.e. policy, industry, regulatory bodies) were conducted to develop recommendations.

My contribution to the collaboration: Quality checking screening and data extraction; conducting data extraction on 118 full text articles; writing of interim report synthesising findings; preparation of materials for workshops to develop recommendations.
